October 2024 Bank Of Uganda Treasury Bond Auctions – What You Need to Know

What Happened in the October 2024 Auctions?

In October, the Bank of Uganda conducted two separate treasury bond auctions:

  • On October 2, they reopened 3-year, 10-year, and 20-year bonds.
  • On October 31, they reopened 2-year, 5-year, and 15-year bonds.

These reopenings allow the government to raise more funds by offering previously issued bonds.

What These Results Tell Us

  • Broad demand across maturities. Investors showed interest in both short- and long-term options.
  • The 5-year bond raised the most in October — a sign that many investors are planning around mid-term goals.
  • Longer-term bonds offered higher interest, making them attractive for retirement and legacy planning.

Real Example: How Much Can You Earn?

Let’s say you invest UGX 1,000,000 in the 15-year bond at 16.75%:

  • You’d earn UGX 167,500 every year, paid in two equal parts
  • Over 15 years, that’s UGX 2,512,500 in interest
  • You’ll also get your full UGX 1,000,000 back at the end

That’s predictable income — no guesswork, no volatility.
